Job Summary

The Quality Business Unit Lead (BUL) position will join a new facility start-up for Hill’s Pet Nutrition, and will participate in start-up activities,developing systems, creating materials and supporting onboarding processes.  The Quality BUL will serve as the subject matter expert on Quality & Food Safety in low acid canned foods. They will be responsible for identifying and reporting Quality & Food Safety issues to management as well as communicating with Operations and Management teams regarding routine matters.

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Ensure proper focus is maintained on all quality checks performed by technicians; provide follow-up training, as needed.  

  • Collaborate with Ops Team Lead and/or other BULs to coordinate necessary resources to address quality and food safety needs.

  • Routinely evaluate product quality, including: seam integrity per FDA guidelines, product aesthetics, product identification and processing conditions.

  • Responsible for ensuring all required product release records are reviewed for accuracy prior to releasing finished product for retail distribution and sale.

  • Identify, segregate and block non-conforming product and assist in timely disposition of the material.

  • Performs ATP and microbiological sampling for environmental and cleaning verification using aseptic technique. Troubleshoots issues and provides corrective actions for sanitation non-conformances.

  • Assist in identifying quality gaps which need correction or improvement for key Quality systems including but not limited to Product Conformance, Raw Material & Product Traceability, Receiving, Storage, & Handling, Non-Conformance SAP system, and Internal / External Audits.

  • Write or modify procedures to support quality compliance; provide follow-up training, as needed.  

  • Meet routinely as a Quality Systems Team to discuss quality issues and address problem areas.  Issue resolution on shift as appropriate.

  • Understands and is accountable for full compliance with EOHS, Quality, Food Safety and HR policies including the plant GMP policies. 

  • Troubleshooting of equipment and / or processes when needed, e.g. NIR, Metal Detector, X-Ray.

 

Education/ Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Willing and able to work any shift schedule, including nights and weekends

  • Willing and able to lift up to 55 lbs repeatedly

  • Willing and able to adhere to all safety and EOHS standards, and wear and utilize all personal protective equipment

  • Comfortable using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.) or Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, etc.) applications

 

Preferred education and experience requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in science field 

  • Minimum 1-2 years of manufacturing experience

  • Previous supervisory work experience 

  • Experience working the Quality Control or Quality Systems 

  • Previous auditing experience working with American Institute of Baking (AIB), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), & Safe Quality Food (SQF) 

  • In-depth knowledge of cGMPs, Quality Standards, FSMA Preventive Controls, HACCP

  • Proficiency in SAP process flow and application.  Able to quickly retrieve and understand data to support FDA, USDA, external and internal audit requests.


Compensation and Benefits
Salary Range $54,400 - $75,000 USD

Pay is determined based on experience, qualifications, and location. Salaried employees may also be eligible for discretionary bonuses, profit-sharing, and long-term incentives for Executive-level roles.

Benefits: Salaried employees enjoy a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, basic life insurance, paid parental leave, disability coverage, and participation in the 401(k) retirement plan with company matching contributions subject to eligibility requirements. Additional benefits include a minimum of 15 vacation/PTO days (hourly employees receive a minimum of 120 hours) and 13 paid holidays (vacation days are prorated based on the employee's hire date within the calendar year). Paid sick leave is adjusted based on role and location in accordance with local laws. Detailed information regarding paid sick leave entitlements will be provided to employees upon hiring and may be subject to adjustments based on changes in legislation or company policies.
