Controls Technician

The Controls Technician is responsible for support and maintenance of the plant electrical and control systems and also performing maintenance on equipment and building as needed.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and troubleshoot plant floor electrical components including: valves, solenoids, control system I/O, measurement and instrumentation systems (flow meters, load cells, photo electrics, level probes, metal detectors, container fill detectors, touch screen monitors, computer equipment and peripherals and container vacuum detection).

  • Maintain and fix Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s) including Allen-Bradley PLC5, Allen-Bradley SLC500 and 5000, Allen-Bradley Control Logix, and Panelview.

  • Function as a technical resource for solving operations, maintenance and engineering (requires climbing, bending and crawling). 

  • Conduct training for controls and electrical related systems for maintenance and operations personnel.

  • Document changes made to software and hardware (electrical and process and instrumentation prints).

  • Must observe accurate Lockout/Tagout and all safety procedures as required

  • Respond to any immediate associate safety issues per work order system.

  • Prioritize and manage work assigned to ensure immediate response to emergencies, diagnose faults quickly and make immediate repairs.

  • Maintain functional knowledge of all site equipment

  • Follow regular checks and follow preventative maintenance schedules, assessing conditions and ensuring compliance with prescribed schedules.

  • Responsible for the safety, quality and food safety in their work area

  • Ability to support the maintenance department by analyzing condition, fix failures, repair and perform preventive/predictive maintenance on production equipment, building and utilities and all associated equipment.

Other Responsibilities:    

  • Work as a team member within the maintenance department to improve the total reliability of the plant

  • Understand maintenance principles and develop self and department work practices to promote a proactive environment

  • Understand and use drawings, diagrams and equipment manufactures instructions

  • Solve electrical controls, motor circuits, single and three phase electrical systems.

  • Other similar duties as assigned by manager

 

Physical/Environmental Requirements:

  • Standing on a concrete floor 

  • Wearing proper personal protective equipment (bump cap, ear plugs, safety shoes, and uniform) 

  • Bending, stooping, twist, turn, standing for extended time periods, reaching, climbing stairs, and lifting up to 55 lbs 

  • Working at heights

  • Working in confined spaces

  • Forklift assignments require OSHA certification and getting on and off frequently 

 

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED Certification

  • At least 2 years manufacturing plant technical experience

  • Ability to read and use electrical schematics

  • Proven experience of fixing electrical circuits (3 phase 480 VAC, 120 VAC, 24 VAC and VDC control circuits)

  • Validated experience of troubleshooting and programming PLC’s using ladder logic programming

  • Experience in Facility maintenance preferred

  • Good overall knowledge of plant flow, operation, and utilities

  • Solid understanding of Safety, Quality and Material Management Systems and procedures

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a team environment with a positive attitude and minimal supervision

  • Good basic math, reading and writing skills

  • Knowledge of Word, Excel and maintenance related software

  • Good problem solving

  • Must be willing and able to work and accept varying shifts and schedules 

  • Ability to understand and effectively communicate in the English language 

  • Successful completion of a substance screening and background check

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least 3 years plant floor experience in a manufacturing or programming role or a degree in a related field. 

  • Solid Understanding of food safety, GMP, GHOP, SPC and HACCP 

  • Know, understand and interpret NEC regulatory requirements


Compensation and Benefits
Salary Range $60,000.00 - $82,000.00 USD

Pay is based on multiple non-discriminatory, individualized factors including but not limited to experience, job-related knowledge and education, skills and office/market location. In addition to base salary, salaried employees are eligible for annual discretionary bonuses, profit-sharing and, for Executive-level (salary grade 16 and above) roles only, long-term incentives in the form of Restricted Stock Units and/or Stock Options.

Subject to the terms and conditions of the applicable benefits plans then in effect, all salaried employees are also eligible for a competitive benefits package which includes:

  • Insurance: Employees (and their eligible dependents) are eligible to participate in Company-sponsored Medical, Dental, Vision, Basic Life Insurance, Accidental Death & Dismemberment and Disability insurance plans.
  • Retirement Plans: Employees are eligible to enroll in Colgate's 401(k) plan, which provides for company matching contributions subject to eligibility requirements
  • Vacation/PTO: Employees receive a minimum of 15 days of vacation/PTO leave annually
  • Paid Holidays: Employees receive a minimum of 13 paid/floating holidays annually
  • Paid Sick Leave: Based on location and consistent with applicable state and local law, employees receive a minimum of 40 hours of paid sick leave on January 1st of each year
  • Paid Parental Leave: Eligible employees may take up to eight weeks of paid parental leave and 12 weeks of unpaid leave (varies for employees with fewer than 12 months of service and is subject to hours worked requirements)
