Working with Hill’s Global Marketing Innovation Team, Product Development, Supply Chain the Senior Packaging Engineer will identify and develop innovative consumer preferred packaging for Hill’s products and maintains critical partnerships with outside packaging vendors.  The ideal candidate will also be responsible for providing project management as needed to design, develop and implement new or improved packaging to enable Hill’s Pet Nutrition to meet strategic business goals while enhancing the experience of consumers when using Hill’s products.

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Leads the conceptualization, initiation, development and implementation of new and improved packages and processes including: prototype development, engineering specifications, mold qualification, functionality and quality testing, and technology transfer. May lead multi-functional teams in some of these projects
  • Leads the design of packaging systems and packaging components, ensuring defined needs for ergonomics, equity aesthetics, consumer acceptance, manufacturing capability and quality are met from the program brief through design, engineering and commercialization
  • Establishes global specifications for packages, processes, which are consistent with KPI goals and support Quality and EOHS Standards. Provides efficient and timely documentation and/or transfer of manufacturing and engineering technologies throughout Hill’s manufacturing plants.
  • Interfaces with GMIT, Divisional/Subsidiary Management and packaging partners, Product Development S&T, and other Pet Care category functions to ensure project meets agreed upon goals. Continuously assesses and communicates project results vs. goals and takes corrective action when required
  • Understands, interprets and refines package testing procedures and standards to support the effective design, validation, and implementation of new packages and packaging technology.  Provides meaningful explanations and forward actions to appropriate Division/Subsidiary personnel. Writes and presents technical and business summaries for both technical and non-technical personnel
  • Generates and presents total delivered cost information on package/process and other pertinent financial information
  • Collaborates with Legal Counsel and Patent Dept. on patent searches, IRs, patent applications and patent defense
  • Builds competitive advantage by identifying, evaluating, and championing technical advancements, design trends and innovations in packaging.  Stays aware of supplier and competitor new developments, and highlight to appropriate management as needed
  • Implements standardization and simplification programs, and margin improvement projects

 

Education/ Experience Requirements

Basic qualifications include:

  • BS in Packaging, Engineering or Material Science with 8+ years of experience in packaging within the food industry  OR MS in in Packaging, Engineering or Material Science with 7+ years of experience in packaging within the food industry 
  • Some experience in package development for retort processes.
