Job summary:


We invite you to apply for the position of Retail Category Development Manager based out of our Virginia Office. The Retail Category Development Manager plays a key role in the customer development organization by acting as the category expert by delivering category best practice presentations that identify opportunities for our customers. 


You’ll act as a consultant and work closely with our customers and internal partners, you’ll be responsible for identifying opportunities that deliver category and customer growth through fact-based recommendations. You’ll assess trends, analyzes shopper, syndicated and point of sale data to identify key customer opportunities for growth.


You must demonstrate expertise in category management and efficient assortment to the customer while providing best in class Category Management results delivering fact-based selling information. Strong proficiency in Nielsen, Homescan Panel, Spectra, IRI , Sequoya, Feature Vision, customer shopper loyalty data and another customer point of sale results is required to be able to provide strong data analysis.


Main duties & responsibilities

  • You’ll act as the category expert through delivering category best practice presentations that identify category opportunities for our customers.
  • Complete customer category review process utilizing category analysis, shopper insights and available analytic tools.
  • Develop customer presentations, recommendations for new item introductions and plan-o-gram reviews.
  • Establish strong, multi-level working relationships with the assigned customers based on mutual trust and integrity
  • Communicate and reinforce brand strategies & priorities to the Team.
  • Initiate & synchronize brand strategies/priorities with customer strategies for a win-win. Execute new product initiatives accordingly.
  • Support category management growth through the application of the most recent sales technologies including shelf management technologies, the point of sale systems and Nielsen applications, with emphasis on fact-based selling. 
  • Demonstrate expertise in category management and efficient assortment to the customer.
  • Use shelf management software and category expertise to provide recommendations for shelf placement for new items and existing products with an objective of securing distribution/placement that is mutually beneficial for Colgate and the account.
  • Coordinate “Fair Share of Shelf” support. Develop planograms using specialized software.
  • Determine the effectiveness of Colgate and competitive promotions through post-analysis, and make recommendations to the account.
  • Provide category management support for internal processes.
  • Be proficient in interpreting shopper and consumer research to drive category solutions development with our customers.
  • Actively participate in team building and best practice sharing to increase team effectiveness.
  • You’ll work across all functional areas of the customer development team in developing the business.
  • You’ll be responsible for the scorecard and for monitoring the execution of 5P activities in line with established objectives and guidelines.

12/15 month location: Chesapeake, VA


Basic Qualifications

  • 3-8 years of consumer product sales or category management experience or other relevant sales/marketing experience is required
  • At least 2+ years of experience analyzing syndicated data (Nielsen, IRI, Retail Link, etc) in a consumer packaged goods industry.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel
  • Proficiency in MS Word and PowerPoint
  • Bachelor's degree


Preferred qualifications

  • Consumer insight experience
  • Advanced proficiency in syndicated data analysis
