Position Summary:


The position of Senior Legal Counsel, Hill's Marketing has direct responsibility for legal advice related to Hill’s global growth initiatives matters, working closely with the Hill’s Global Growth and Innovation Team (GGIT) and Hill’s Quality, S&T and Regulatory functions on product innovation, product development, claims generation and substantiation, global strategy, and execution plans. The position will also cover advice and management oversight of global Legal-Marketing matters generated in the countries in which Hill’s operates globally, working with lawyers in Colgate-Palmolive’s Global Legal Organization (GLO) as required.


The Senior Legal Counsel, Hill’s Marketing will report to the Division General Counsel of Hill’s and will directly manage one Senior Legal Assistant.   Also, as part of the Colgate-Palmolive Legal-Marketing Specialty, the position will report on a dotted-line basis to the VP & Sr. Associate General Counsel, Marketing & Trademarks, Commercial, and Legal Operations in the GLO (located in New York).  Specific position responsibilities will include the following:


  • Working with Hill’s Global Growth and Innovation Team (GGIT) on strategy for global execution, global product development, marketing claims generation, substantiation;


  • Ensuring legal compliance with applicable federal and state advertising and promotion laws, regulations, guidance and decisions, including the National Advertising Division (US) and non-US self-regulatory bodies, and in line with company standards and approaches (NA and Global) or terms of use of social media sites;


  • Evaluating and identifying risk regarding advertising copy, labels, promotions, IMC, social, digital, etc.;


  • Training initiatives on legal issues in Marketing;


  • Developing, executing, and training on process improvements;


  • Supporting on challenges arising in other global jurisdictions, providing guidance and advice from the global perspective;


  • Leveraging strong partnerships with GGIT and S&T to play a critical role in rolling out global products;


  • Educating other GLO members on Hill's products and strategies;


  • Advising on general commercial legal risks associated with marketing activities, in particular in eCommerce, digital and new media (search strategies, influencer models etc.);


  • Support on Legal/Regulatory matters, including close alignment with Regulatory as it relates to product quality, new product development, claims generation and support;


  • Familiarity and understanding of key AAFCO regulations for labeling and FDA regulations regarding the marketing of therapeutic pet food; work with the global Regulatory Affairs team to monitor activities, developments and industry trade associations for issues/ concerns of relevance to Hill's globally;


  • Working with GLO North America Regulatory Lawyers on key projects relating to Hill’s products, ingredients, new markets and other key regulatory assessment and interpretation matters;


  • General support for the Regulatory and Quality team on matters of legal interpretation and compliance; 


  • Generalist legal advice in commercial operations where needed, including contracts advice and negotiation, general antitrust counsel, identifying data privacy implications of growth projects and digital initiatives proposed by GGIT, support on litigation matters managed by GLO Litigation Group, support on M&A transactions.);


  • Support on Intellectual Property matters, including identifying copyright, patent, and trademark issues and referring them to appropriate specialist(s) for attention and resolution.


Position Requirements:


  • J.D. and 6+ years of relevant experience in legal practice required; prefer candidates with experience advising in a corporate legal environment in consumer goods industry;


  • Qualified candidates will have deep knowledge of Marketing law and associated areas;


  • Solid knowledge of regulations associated with the sale of pet food, together with knowledge of scientific concepts associated with pet nutrition, clinical trials and claims support required;


  • Ability to identify potential issues with legal implications and deliver legal advice and risk mitigation strategies;


  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities, ability to work independently and collaborate with all levels of the business and legal organization are all required;


  • Selected candidate will have strong ethics and integrity and an ability to balance business relationships with independent legal review and advice;


  • Strong time management and task prioritization skills required with the ability to multitask needed to resolve issues and effectively manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.




Salary Range:  $152,800 - $225,750

Pay is based on several non-discriminatory factors including but not limited to experience, education, skills and office location.  In addition to your salary, Colgate-Palmolive offers a performance based bonus and competitive benefits package.
