Responsible for ensuring compliance by Hill’s Pet Nutrition with regulations and statutes concerning research and development, manufacturing, distribution, marketing and sales of Hill’s products in the United States and where international regulations and statutes may impact U.S. produced products. Possess technical and regulatory expertise (for North America regulatory system and internal HQ regulatory processes). Supervise an internal regulatory team focusing on finished product and packaging compliance as well as international market access support.  Work independently and collaboratively in research activities, showing and sharing knowledge of pet food regulations.  

Support regulatory related activities, including but not limited to: regulatory intelligence gathering, international and domestic regulatory submissions, ingredients, labeling, claims, import/export processes & review process for packaging, marketing materials, digital information and product life-cycle activities.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities

-Regulatory Product Support: Lead the internal team to ensure product labeling and documentation is complete, accurate, compliant, and submitted in a timely manner. Lead the creation, review of applicable Standard Operating Procedures/Work Instructions and policy guidelines with updates or audits as needed.  Create POVs and guidance documents as needed.  Help support the manager with identifying, monitoring and reporting on pet food regulation and guidance issues/changes that may impact Hill’s operation and their products.

-Regulatory Subject Matter Expert: Serve as a Regulatory representative for finished product & packaging compliance.  Assemble and help communicate information relative to product changes, new product attributes and current go-to-market information and timing.  Raise critical project issues, identify root causes, and propose potential solutions.  Assist in the development and execution of brand strategies for new product launches, reformulations and product improvements.  Develop industry regulatory expertise and provide support to aid in assessing and troubleshooting issues as they arise.  Develop and continually upgrade a strong working knowledge of AAFCO Rules, FDA and relevant international regulations and guidelines that affect the pet food industry.  Maintain extensive product line knowledge to assure high standards for accurate and consistent responses to internal and external customers.

-People Management: Day-to-day supervision of internal regulatory personnel, including coaching, training and development.  Responsible for achieving independent and team results and ensuring direct reports are accountable for their performance and impact.  Ensures sharing of technical knowledge within the team as well as establishing and maintaining appropriate backup assignments to ensure continuity of business. 

-Internal and External Relationship Building: Develop and maintain good working business relationships as well as a climate of teamwork with internal groups such as Legal, R&D, Quality, Marketing, and Customer Service as well as relevant external government officials and vendors, as needed.  Translate knowledge of science, technology and characteristics of Hill's products and processes to effectively communicate cross-functionally with Product Development, Clinical Nutrition & Claims, Quality, and regulatory agencies.  Represent organization as requested with industry/regulatory organizations.


Education/ Experience Requirements

  • Required:  Bachelor’s degree in business, policy, natural sciences or related field

  • 3+ years of experience in regulatory affairs within any of the following industries: pet food, animal feed, food, OTC drugs, medical device, pharmaceutical


Preferred Requirements

  • Master’s or PhD in business, policy, animal sciences or DVM

  • 1 year supervisory experience

  • Minimum of 2 years in preparing regulatory registration submissions, packaging compliance review, analyzing and interpreting product regulations

  • Minimum of 2 years interpreting and applying AAFCO rules and guidelines and applicable U.S. (e.g., FDA,USDA) and foreign regulations

  • Pet Food industry experience or a technical background in: Regulatory Science, Quality Assurance, Product Development, Laboratory Sciences or similar work experience.

Salary Range $77,120 - $113,400 USD


Pay is based on several non discriminatory factors including but not limited to experience, education, skills and office location. In addition to your salary, Colgate-Palmolive offers a performance based bonus and competitive benefits package.
