Job Summary


Work independently and collaboratively in researching, interpreting, and applying food labeling/ingredient principles to ensure compliance with all regulations and statutes during the development, manufacture, and sale of Hill’s Pet Nutrition products. Develop strong regulatory understanding to provide expertise and advice on regulatory requirements, processes and activities for the governance of pet food. Support regulatory related activities, including but not limited to: regulatory intelligence gathering, international and domestic regulatory submissions, ingredients, labeling, import/export processes & review process for formulas, packaging, marketing materials, digital information and product life-cycle activities.

 

Main Responsibilities

 

  • Manufacturing Subject Matter Expert: Apply conceptual knowledge of business processes and technology to resolve issues and improve existing procedures. Assemble and communicate information relative to product changes, new product attributes and current go-to-market information and timing for manufacturers/contract manufacturers. Develop proficiency in relevant information systems. Raise critical project issues, identify root causes, and propose potential solutions. Assist in the development and execution of business strategies for new product launches, reformulations and product improvements.
  • Regulatory Subject Matter Expert: Develop general Regulatory expertise and serve as the Regulatory representative related to all aspects of product manufacturing and contract manufacturing. Primary responsibility of ensuring ongoing manufacturing regulatory compliance related to ingredient, nutrition, formula, and packaging for key manufacturing/contract manufacturing partners through representation, documentation/process control, and regulatory vigilance.
  • Regulatory Process Support: Maintain regulatory files and electronic databases of manufactured products including change management. Develop SOP’s (Standard Operating Procedures) and Work Instructions in order to maintain standardization for regulatory processes and guidance. Track and report status of assigned regulatory activities and functions. Monitor and support manufacturing facility(s) export requirements and approvals. Continuously improve established processes and update policies to reflect current practices.
  • Regulatory Intelligence and Troubleshooting: Develop industry regulatory expertise and provide support to aid in assessing and troubleshooting issues as they arise. Develop and continually upgrade a strong working knowledge of AAFCO Rules, FDA and relevant international regulations and guidelines that affect the pet food industry. Maintain extensive product line knowledge to assure high standards for accurate and consistent responses to internal and external customers.
  • Internal and External Relationship Building: Develop and maintain good working business relationships with key partners such as Global Regulatory Affairs, Manufacturing partners, R&D, Quality, Marketing, and Legal as well as relevant external government officials and vendors, as needed. Translate knowledge of science, technology and characteristics of Hill's products and processes to effectively communicate cross-functionally with Product Development, Clinical Nutrition & Claims, Quality, and regulatory agencies. Represent organization as requested with industry/regulatory organizations. Establish credibility and foster mutually supportive global relationships through good communication practices.

Education/ Experience Requirements:

 

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, policy, or other technical field
  • Preferred: Master’s or PhD (or equivalent) in animal sciences, engineering, policy

 

Experience:

 

  • Required: Minimum of 4 years of work experience, with 2 years supporting regulatory affairs, product development, product manufacturing, and/or compliance
  • Preferred: 3+ years regulatory affairs, quality, compliance or legal work experience
  • Preferred: Pet Food industry experience or a technical background in: Regulatory Science, Quality Assurance, Product Development, Laboratory Sciences or similar work experience.

  • Proficient in SAP, Google tools, and Microsoft Excel
  • Detail oriented with good organization and planning skills
  • Ability to research, interpret, and apply Federal, State, and International regulations
  • Ability to understand and comply with domestic and international regulatory requirements
  • High energy, proactive self-starter and self-directed
