Colgate-Palmolive/Tom's of Maine invites applications for a Laboratory Supervisor position based at our Sanford, ME location.

Our Analytical Lab Supervisor is responsible for physical and/or chemical laboratory operations and ensuring that the central and plant floor testing is done in conformance to CP Standards and Guidelines as well as all local regulatory requirements. The Lab Supervisor implements Laboratory Control programs that ensure all sampling, testing and retention programs based on the requirements of the Quality Standard 024 – Lab Testing.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Plan, manage and lead the analytical chemistry laboratory staff
  • Ensure adequate coverage to support operations
  • Maintain the laboratory budget
  • ∙ Understand and be able to accurately follow written laboratory procedures, global methods and published standard or compendia sources
  • Ensure calibration, maintenance of all laboratory instruments, equipment and accurate use of analytical reference standards
  • Coordinate the monthly lab Key Process Indicator (KPI) calculations
  • Build relationship and maintain regular contact with Divisional Quality, Global Analytical, Product Development and Global Quality Technology
  • Ensure analytical methods for key release specifications (KRS) of finished products have gone through appropriate validations and the local laboratory is qualified to perform the analysis prior to manufacturing the product
  • Develops and implements a physical and chemical sampling and testing program for raw materials, work-in-process (WIP) & finished products at the facility. This plan must be based on QS 024, and local regulatory requirements.
  • Ensures all testing is performed according to corporate methods, laboratory requirements, applicable regulatory requirements, and policy. This includes the set up and administration of a laboratory quality assurance system that covers analyst qualification as well as equipment IQ/OQ/PQ, calibration and maintenance.
  • Understands and uses laboratory safety equipment and instructions, precautions in handling, storage and disposing of reagents and chemical waste in accordance with local environmental regulations.
  • Ensures that the reporting of data and maintenance of records is documented. Also, that the interpretation of the data is correct and that the results are optimally communicated to appropriate individuals, including management.
  • Devises and executes a program of routine problem resolution and continuous improvement.
  • Trains & develops laboratory staff using the principles of Coaching & Feedback as well as the Laboratory Analyst Development Program (LADP). Conducts regular mentoring & feedback and is responsible for annual performance appraisals
  • Understands the site manufacturing processes and requirements and is able to prioritize workload even in a rapidly changing environment. Provides clear direction to the lab team despite ambiguity. Will act as a change agent.
  • Achieves results with speed and excellence, simplifying systems to eliminate unnecessary work and holds team members accountable for delivering results.
  • Participates in internal audits and external audits (contract manufacturers and labs, suppliers, etc.) Functions as part of the Plant GMP and Quality Team.
  • Interfaces with Global & Divisional Quality/RTC teams to provide input on programs, procedures and methods, and receives mentorship & support on implementation of programs.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry or related major with a minimum of five years laboratory experience in the pharmaceutical, medical device, cosmetic or consumer products industries.
  • Require 3-5 years of proven laboratory supervision skills
  • Possess excellent ability to understand, read, speak and write in English
  •  Excellent interpersonal, communication skills and ability to lead team in a multifaceted environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A strong ability & knowledge of Statistical Process Control tools
  • Trouble shooting and manufacturing process experience is helpful
  • Strong multitasking skills and excellent time management skills
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • User knowledge of SAP, Microsoft Project and Minitab software is preferred
