This position is part of Colgate’s Global Design and Packaging Department responsible for the Oral Care Category.  Oral Care is the company’s largest and most profitable division, delivering nearly 40% of annual sales and profit of which Toothbrush is $ 1.3 Billion in sales.  This position supports the primary company strategies of Driving Growth, by developing and implementing innovative consumer preferred packaging, and Funding Growth, by driving savings and standardization efforts globally.  The role is cross-functional in nature, working closely with Marketing, Product Development, Design, and the Supply Chain.  Partnerships with packaging partners, institutes and contract manufacturers are a critical element of job responsibilities.

 

As part of the Global corporate structure, this role supports packaging priorities across all business Divisions through a tightly linked network of Packaging Teams in each of the Colgate subsidiaries.

 

Specific Responsibilities

  • Manage the conceptualization, development and implementation of packaging and processes including: design generation, prototype development, technical specifications, mold and machinery qualification, functionality and quality testing, and technology transfer.

  • Manage the design of packaging components and packaging systems, ensuring defined needs for ergonomics, equity aesthetics, consumer acceptance, manufacturing capability, sustainability guidelines and quality are met from the program brief through design, engineering and commercialization. 

  • Establish global specifications for manual toothbrushes and devices packaging, processes, and/or equipment, which are consistent with KPI goals. Provide efficient and timely documentation and transfer of manufacturing and engineering technologies throughout the Colgate world.  

  • Partner with Global Marketing, Divisional/Subsidiary Management and packaging partners, Toothbrush and Device Product Development, and Supply Chain functions to ensure projects meet agreed upon goals. Continuously assess and communicate project results vs. goals and take corrective action when required.

  • Lead multi-functional teams on Packaging led initiatives.

  • Generate and lead value engineering initiatives for the category.

  • Provide rationale for funds needed to successfully test and deliver packaging.

  • Translate design briefs and design intent to prototypes, technical drawings and specifications. 

  • Write and present technical and business summaries for circulation.

  • Build competitive advantage by identifying, evaluating, and championing technical advancements, design trends and innovations in packaging.  Stay aware of supplier and competitor new developments, and highlight the same to leadership as needed.

  • Develop, justify and execute capital projects related to packaging (i.e. molds/machinery)·  

  • Coordinates and executes lab evaluations, quality control procedures and test method development.  Support Divisional needs in identifying quality defects and driving resolution.

  • Collaborates with GTD (Global Toothbrush Division) Network Operations as needed to help develop and negotiate local, regional, or global contracts with suppliers or contractors.  Evaluates and coordinates supplier’s and contractor’s activities related to on-going projects.

 

Basic Qualifications

  • BS or MS in Packaging, Engineering or Material Science

  • At least 7 years of packaging experience in a consumer products, packaged goods

  • Expertise in paperboard, paper, blister pack, thermoforming, and distribution packaging.

  • Ability to travel up to 20% time (domestic and international) based on project needs

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • 7 - 9 years of experience in Packaging in FMCG.

  • Experience working with multiple regions 

  • Experience coordinating packaging development projects with Product Development, (R&D), Marketing, Supply Chain & External Partners.

  • Experience in package testing, ISTA, Recyclability testing, packaging specifications & artwork management.

  • Strong communication and project management skills 

  • Awareness of packaging sustainability and applications

  • Graphic design & decoration treatments knowledge are useful

  • Quality processes and systems, tech transfer, audit skills

  • CAD/CAE programs experience to create packaging designs and prototypes

Salary Range $88,800 - $131,250 USD
