What role will you play as a member of the legal team?

Colgate-Palmolive Company seeks a Patent Counsel with 5 to 10+ years of law firm or in-house experience to assist with the management of Colgate’s chemical-related global patent portfolios in its Oral Care, Pet Nutrition, Personal Care and Home Care categories.

As a Chemical Patent Attorney, you will be responsible for managing a large portfolio of including oversight of outside counsel and in-house patent agents.

  • Providing counseling and legal opinions with respect to patentability, validity, and freedom to operate.


Your responsibilities are:

  • Collaborate with, train and recommend business and legal partners on all aspects of patent law and strategy, including patentability, product coverage, competitor analysis and freedom-to-operate..
  • Support IP-related litigation


Required Qualifications:

  • At least from 5 to 10 years of law firm or in-house legal experience
  • Admitted to the Bar of at least one state and to the US Patent and Trademark Office
  • At least a bachelor's degree in Biology, Bioengineering, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Nutrition Science.
  • Experience managing a large global patent portfolio, including drafting and prosecuting patent applications.
  • Excellent client counseling skills are required, including strong verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Experience in rendering patentability, invalidity and freedom to operate opinions.


Preferred qualifications:

  • Prior experience in due diligence activities and agreement drafting/negotiation.
  • Outstanding organization and project management skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills; a team player able to establish and build partnerships across all levels of the legal, business, and Research and Development teams
  • Must have the ability to multi-task, balance multiple priorities, and deliver results in a fast-paced, constantly-changing environment
