In today's multifaceted world, it is an exciting time to join our legal organization.  What role will you play as a member of the legal team?  Under general attorney supervision, the Senior Legal Assistant supporting Marketing will identify and help resolve legal issues related to the advertising and promotion of Colgate products in the US and Canada to help drive the business and help lead projects with Colgate cross-functional team members.  You will also develop and present recommendations related to legal issues related to claims, claim support and advertising, including reviewing claims, advertising, packaging, and other external company communications, performing legal research, drafting materials for attorney review, and creating and providing presentations and trainings to help educate the business.  You develop expertise in our product categories by analyzing and assessing competitive advertisements for legal issues, supporting challenges brought by and against the company, and providing valuable input to improve our processes and systems. 
 


What you will do

 

  • Help support the legal compliance of all advertising and promotional activities of Colgate’s North America Division brands, such as Tom’s of Maine, Colgate, hello, Palmolive, Irish Spring, and Softsoap.
  • Provide paralegal support for legal challenges related to advertising brought by or against Colgate, including litigation.  Collaborate with internal cross-functional teams, other legal colleagues, and outside legal counsel related to marketing-related legal challenges.   
  • Draft reports, memos, and other materials, with substance, for attorney review and help maintain an online tracking system. 
  • Provide feedback and identify risks regarding proposed product claims and advertising copy, product labels, promotions, social, digital, influencer and other marketing executions.   
  • Collaborate with internal cross-functional team members and contribute legal comments regarding advertising claims and their support, as well as the review and clearance of  advertising and promotional materials, including in digital and social media.  Review claims, packaging and marketing materials in online systems. 
  • Liaise with Contracts legal counsel, Colgate Trademarks department, and marketing teams to support  the drafting and negotiation of marketing-related NDAs, MSAs, SOWs, Amendments, permission letters and consent and releases, as well as other Agreements.   Interface with internal business partners regarding contract issues, as needed.   
  • Provide legal research and prepare summaries and memoranda 
  • Draft Google Slides/PowerPoint presentations related to marketing-legal issues, including preparing and providing legal training to the business under attorney’s direction and supervision.

 

Required Qualifications

 

  • Paralegal studies or Bachelor's Degree preferably in Legal, Marketing, or related fields. 
  • At least 5 years of work experience required; in a corporate legal environment with a focus on marketing or advertising preferred, but other experience in a corporate legal environment or a law firm could be sufficient with the right candidate. 
  • Experience using MS Word,DocuSign/AdobeSign, Google tools (Docs/Sheets/Slides), Gmail.  Familiarity working with online databases or tools preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities, ability to work independently and collaborate with all levels of the business and legal organization. 
  • Strong leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. 
  • Strong time management skills and ability to manage multiple projects and to prioritize tasks.     
  • Good analytical/quantitative skills and excellent collaboration skills. 
  • Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment in order to resolve issues. 
     

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

  • At least 10 years of experience in a corporate legal environment
  • Contract/Agreement Drafting and Negotiation Experience
  • Understands the product category and competitive landscape such that the knowledge informs analysis and decisions being made
