Job Summary

 

The Controls Technician is responsible for the effective operation of production equipment. Works with others to achieves factory business objectives of safety, productivity, customer service, quality, cost and environmental protection. The primary accountabilities of the role include attaining high equipment reliability and uptime, safety compliance, equipment maintenance procedures, data collection, housekeeping, problem solving and continuous improvement as part of a work team. The Controls Technician works within a structure that requires considerable interaction with others in the same production unit as well as other production units and support functions.

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Leads major and minor maintenance of automated and non-automated equipment (making, finishing) through computer terminals, control panels and/or by manual means in the manufacturing of Colgate-Palmolive products (including electrical wiring, process and program analysis).
  • Troubleshoots, performs major and minor repairs and preventive maintenance as required to ensure equipment reliability and on-going production (working with OEM & consultants as needed)
  • Is the first point of contact in case of electrical and control systems malfunction on production lines.
  • Works with Control Engineer to establish, review, improve and execute plant control system standards including PM tasks
  • Undertakes daily reporting and updates of information systems including documentation of maintenance activities performed on equipment
  • Provides support on capital projects in the production floor and to determine recommended spare part list.
  • Participates in new equipment installation, validation and start up processes of controls systems
  • Maintain, develop and troubleshoot:
    • Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) including Allen Bradley ControlLogix, SLC500, and CompactLogix; and SCADA systems
    • ABB Robots
    • Multi-access Servo Controls
  • Maintain, develop, and troubleshoot Operator Interfaces utilizing Wonderware and Rockwell Panel Builder.
  • Confirms in-house availability of tools, change and spare parts required to keep production running.
  • Coordinates with upstream and downstream processes by working with others in planning, warehouse, receiving and vendor representatives on timing of effective changeovers.
  • Accurately stores tools, change parts and spare parts in appropriate locations.
  • Supports Failure Investigations in respective areas.
  • Conduct training for controls and electrical related systems for maintenance and operations personnel.
  • Highlights potential maintenance issues and takes corrective action including parts requisitioning and maintenance planning
  • Replaces electrical equipment when needed
  • Recommends, decides and implements actions under daily operation pressure to drive production lines performance.
  • Accurately and fully completes all regulatory and compliance related documentation and procedures; highlights variances
  • Participates in structured group or team activities related to line/area performance improvement e.g. continuous improvement, autonomous maintenance, problem solving etc.
  • Seeks and understands production scheduling and demands and prioritizes maintenance activities that support and facilitates production schedules and demands.
  • Seeks and applies Continuous Improvement tools and techniques to achieve team goals
  • Other job functions that may be assigned.

 

Qualifications

 

Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 3 years industrial maintenance work experience in a manufacturing or production environment
  • Knowledge of industrial automation networks (ControlNet, DeviceNet, Ethernet, Profibus)
  • Capability to analyze and replace automation hardware devices (VFD, SMS, PLC, IO cards, instruments)
  • Ability to design and troubleshoot 3 phase 480VAC and 24DC circuits.
  • Ability to design and troubleshoot 120VAC and 24VDC circuits.
  • Ability to program and troubleshoot PLCs utilizing ladder logic.
  • Ability to commission and troubleshoot variable frequency drives.
  • Ability to work an off-shift work schedule that includes weekends.
  • Practical skills in working with technical documentation (electrical schematic drawings, P&IDs, equipment manuals)
  • Ability to participate in an on-call rotation coverage including nights and weekends.
  • Ability to bend, climb, crawl, and work in confined spaces for up to twelve hours per day.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

 

Preferred:

 

  • Associates degree, vocational school or technical certificate in an industrial related field.
  • 5-7 years manufacturing or similar experience is preferred, with an emphasis in industrial maintenance, mechanics and electronics.
  • Experience working with Allen Bradley Controllers and drives (SERCOS).
  • Experience using Wonderware (InTouch, InBatch, Archestra) and Rockwell Panel Builder.
  • Working knowledge of SAP
  • Experience working with food safety regulated environments (AIB, FDA, USDA, cGMP)
