Job Summary

The NIR Specialist is responsible for supporting the evaluation, development and implementation of rapid on-line/in-line/at-line methods for process monitoring, control, and release of raw materials, premixes, and finished products in compliance with CP Standards and Guidelines. This position provides technical support to manufacturing facilities in the areas of analytical chemistry, Near-Infared (NIR) and chemometric techniques, development and validation of calibration curves, technology transfer and training.

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

 

 

 

  • Support strategy development and implement Hill’s rapid analysis program. Develop, validate, and manage NIR calibration curves for ingredients and finished products.

 

  • Responsible for the diagnostic test for all NIR equipment and for the NIR training of operators / lab technicians.

 

  • Provides NIR training to site operators &  laboratory technicians

 

  • Responsible for validating NIR equipment & equations, adjusting BIAS, maintaining and checking control charts, performs NIR scans of materials, and provides service for NIR equipment and schedules / conducts its regular maintenance

 

  • Reporting and administration of laboratory results (internal and external) and ongoing analysis

 

  • Application of statistical methods and technical knowledge for assessing material results and researching quality improvement in analytical testing

 

  • Uses laboratory safety equipment and understands precautions when working with reagents and handling waste according to local regulations

 

  • Provides support for troubleshooting of analytical methods and laboratory out-of-specification investigations

 

  • Supports quality and food safety initiatives including participating in audits, providing input for HACCP implementation and food safety program maintenance, execution of the CAPA program and investigation of quality non-conformances

 

  • Maintaining and improving procedures/work instructions for sampling and analytical methods (laboratory and factory)

 

  • Partner with Supply Chain Processing Systems, design and perform feasibility studies of potential new applications for process monitoring and control

Education/ Experience Requirements

Basic qualifications include: 

  • B.A./B.S. degree in Food Science, Chemistry, Engineering, Microbiology, Biochemistry or related field

  • Italian speaking proficiency

  • 1-3 years of experience working in a manufacturing environment / chemical laboratory

  • Basic proficiency / experience with analytical testing methods (rapid & conventional) 

 

Preferred qualifications include: 

  • 3-5 years of experience preferably in the food industry with a focus on laboratory testing

  • Detailed knowledge of NIR operation software (ISIScan, ISINova,Mosaic, etc.) or comparable laboratory software and equipment

  • English speaking proficiency

  • Excellent critical thinking skills used to evaluate relevant information and make determinations about compliance to laws, regulations, policies, or standards

  • Proficient at collaborating with EU Regulatory agencies, Customers, or other agencies during an audit
