Position Purpose:

The Plant Engineering Manager is responsible for the oversight of the Engineering department for the facility as well as other facility infrastructure functions. The Engineering manager must ensure successful execution of the plant’s capital program which can include multiple projects with varying scope, timelines and capital, project schedule adherence, project cost containment, technology transfer and corporate EOHS and Quality standards compliance.  The Plant Engineering Manager manages a staff of project engineers, controls technicians and temporary engineering staff (e.g. engineering interns).

Let's talk about Responsibilities:

  • Technical/Continuous Improvement– Ensures the integrity of process or packing equipment specifications, layouts/designs, electrical and controls requirements and project documentation.  Stays abreast of latest technical developments and identifies potential applications for manufacturing continuous improvement. Utilizes risk analysis, evaluate vertical integration possibilities and conduct benchmarking.
  • Project Management- Provides the support to deliver all the PSC initiatives as planned. Ensures the right priorities are assigned to the various projects and resources are adequate and focused.  Monitors project progress, modify plans and initiate corrective actions based on feedback and changes.  Provides support and guidance to project engineers in managing projects.  Communicates and manage issues/risks with corporate/divisional leadership.
  • Bid Process – Communicates the importance of the bid review process with engineers and ensures the integrity of the processReviews bid package contents with engineers and conduct final review for vendor selection with Purchasing.
  • On-going Vendor Management and Factory Acceptance  Testing –Ensures appropriate protocols are followed for ongoing vendor management and shop testing/factory acceptance testing.
  • Financial Management – Develops/implements facility Capital Budget. Ensures programs meet financial hurdles prescribed by corporate on % savings contribution, Return on Investment (ROI) and pay back period (DPP). Reviews, updates and approves Work Orders using the Capital Management System. Monitors ongoing project cost and adherence to budget and cash spending plan using SAP. Supports and manages facility operational budgets, including buildings, utilities, security, cafeteria etc., consistent with the role of the engineering function
  • Asset Management – Responsible for the timely capitalization of assets, management of surplus equipment and use of global idle equipment databases for capital avoidance.  Manages annual asset inventory. Reviews and analyzes plant process capacity data and identifies bottlenecks.  Develops five year site plan in partnership with Plant Manager.
  • Quality/EOHS Compliance – Ensures all projects are in compliance with appropriate Colgate standards and local regulations. Reviews and follows up on consumer complaint information. Ensures e-MOC requirements are met for all capital projects.
  • Production –Ensures appropriate EMO’s (Experimental Manufacturing Orders) are conducted to verify that process/equipment meets design specification and that personnel are trained appropriately. Ensures expected Cp/CpK and Asset Utilization is achieved on all projects.  Develop site contingency plans in partnership with Plant Manager and Corporate Risk Management.
  • Technology Transfer – Ensures learnings on projects are appropriately captured, communicated and applied.  Appropriate involvement in selected Continuous Improvement Reviews (CIR’s), Risk Analyses CIP’s/FMEA’s, Communities of Practice etc.
  • Site Visual Control – Together with Plant Manager or FP&R Area Lead, develops and implements site visual communication and control plan.
  • Team Building – Provides coaching and mentoring to technical team while developing relationships with others in key functional areas. Celebrates project success with teams involved in project execution and administration.
  • Project Negotiation – Negotiates with and influences divisional and category management regarding resources and project direction on behalf of project teams. Monitors project/program progress, challenges assumptions and data to improve results, modifies plans, and take necessary corrective actions. Negotiates with vendors/suppliers regarding delivery schedules, cost and change control.
  • People Management - Directs the continuous improvement of the Project Engineering staff by selecting, recruiting, developing, and retaining highly competent people.  Develops and implements performance evaluations, career development opportunities, and succession planning programs for the department.  Defines and implements changes to the organizational structure as needed to achieve goals.
  • Ensures personnel adheres to Hill's policies, safety standards, and Good Manufacturing Practices including Quality Assurance and Food Safety.


Physical functions:


  • Walk unlimited distances each day
  • Bend at waist 90 degrees and flex at knees 120 degrees
  • Wear required personal protective equipment, including hearing, eye, foot and dust protection
  • Perceive visual and audible alarms and telephones while wearing hearing protection
  • Receive and transmit information in person and by telephone communications
  • Exposure to both cold and hot work environments aligned to external temperatures as well as confined space both inside and outside the facility
  • Exposure to dry ingredients (primarily grain) producing a dusty environment (dusk mask provided)
  • Exposure to industrial chemicals used in production, equipment for testing and treatment of liquids including water
  • Sit at a desk intermittently for up to 8 hours per day
  • Occasional lifting up to 60lbs
  • Type, using a computer keyboard, intermittently for up to six hours per day


What you need for this position:


  • BS Degree in Engineering; MS in a technical field or MBA would be an advantage. A Professional Engineer (PE) license would be a plus.
  • 7+  yrs experience in production management and/or project management/engineering experience
  • Familiarity with Company practices related to EOHS, Quality and Microbiology, and plant financials

  • SAP skills are preferred
