The Packaging Engineer is part of a team that (1) identifies and validates new packaging technology / methods, (2) develops and implements new packaging specs (3) provides technical expertise to plants to identify and implement solutions to packaging equipment/material issues and to continuous improvement goals, (4) identifies projects that contribute cost savings and to sustainability goals. 

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Works with Supply Chain, Marketing and other functional groups to develop and implement packaging related projects.
  • Works with plant operations and contract manufacturers to conduct packaging tests using standardized methodologies for technology transfer process
  • Records and analyzes test data and prepares reports to include recommendations and conclusions
  • Uses and maintains PGSS specification system for all assigned packaging material categories
  • Builds competitive advantage by identifying, evaluating, and championing technical advancements, design trends and innovations in packaging.  Stays aware of supplier and competitor new developments, and highlight to appropriate management as needed
  • Assists in the development of new promotional displays and POS materials at shelf, on pack and in pack materials
  • Understands the capabilities of the Packaging Laboratory test equipment and exhibits a working knowledge of their operation
  • Establishes global specifications for packages, processes, and/or  equipment, which are consistent with KPI goals and support Quality and EOHS Standards. Provides efficient and timely documentation and/or transfer of manufacturing and engineering technologies throughout Hill’s manufacturing plants.

Basic qualifications include:

  • BS Degree in Packaging Engineering, Material Science or relevant technical field
  • Must be proficient with the following computer programs:
    • MS Word/Excel/PowerPoint
    • Access Dbase
