Position Purpose:

 

The Plant Packaging Area Team Leader is responsible for driving continuous improvement initiatives for all packaging systems to improve the plant’s quality, productivity, and reliability.  This position will also have primary responsibility for managing capital projects, supporting daily plant operations and managing the technology transfer process for all of the packaging area.  In addition this position will lead the development and implementation of process improvements (reliability, waste, product quality, safety, cost per pound) to meet business needs.

 

Let's talk about Responsibilities:

 

  • Lead the development and implementation of process improvements (reliability, waste, product quality, safety, cost per pound) to meet business needs
  • Responsible for the design, specification, development, installation, plant start-up, and troubleshooting for new products / equipment and cost savings initiatives through the application of the PSI process
  • Project management including project definition, project planning, capital expenditure management, and technology transfer associated with capital projects and new products / pkg
  • Lead technology transfer for the plant and support global packaging engineering with implementation of new capital projects, new packages and packaging features including leading all packaging testing
  • Develop and maintain specifications, technical documentation, and procedures for packaging processes and equipment which are consistent with KPI goals and support Quality and EOHS Standards
  • Develop, validate, and transfer factory SOP’s associated with new products and process improvements
  • Function as a resource for trouble shooting / problem solving of packaging issues including coordination of packaging equipment vendor visits as required to address technical and operational issues
  • Develop working procedures, instructions, and machine settings to maintain optimal machine operation
  • Support plant and QA in identifying quality defects and driving resolution internally and with suppliers to improve packaging material quality
  • Implement specific standardization, simplification and margin improvement projects
  • Develop new insights and drive innovative engineering and packaging solutions
  • Accountable for meeting or exceeding safety standards according to the Hill’s Safety program

 

What you need for this position:

 

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering, Package Engineering, or related industrial technical field
  • 3 + years packaging engineering experience in a manufacturing facility
  • Must be proficient with the following computer programs:   MS Word/Excel/Access/PowerPoint/Google Applications
  • 3 + years’ experience managing capital projects, budgets, and contractors
  • Proficient in food safety and sanitation design and practices
  • Must be able to bend, climb, crawl, work in confined spaces, work in hazardous condition spaces, work in extreme weather conditions, use hazardous materials and ability to work at heights of up to 120 ft., use a mechanical lift, or ladder
  • Must be able to work in a standard office environment

 

It’s an advantage to have:

 

  • Proficient in AutoCAD
  • Food Related Production Experience
  • Technical proficiency including:
    • Packaging technologies including filling, palletizing, stretch hooding, conveying
    • Standards, weights and measures requirements
    • AIB, FDA, USDA and other regulatory agency design requirements
    • Proficient in Statistical Process Control, CPk and Continuous Improvement Methodologies

  • Works with cross functional teams to implement and maintain CP Best Practices for Factory Performance and Reliability
  • Works with packaging and equipment suppliers to improve quality, reliability, cost, and safety
  • Prepares engineering estimates, savings analysis, and project justifications for capital projects
  • Proficient knowledge of HACCP, GMPs, and SPC
  • Must be able to bend, climb, crawl, work in confined spaces, work in hazardous condition spaces, work in extreme weather conditions, use hazardous materials and ability to work at heights of up to 120 ft., use a mechanical lift, or ladder

 

Physical Requirements:

 

  • Ability to wear all required Fall Protection Equipment and all other PPE
  • Ability to bend, climb, crawl, and kneel as needed to perform the functions of the job
  • Ability to work in confined spaces
  • Ability to work with hazardous materials
  • Ability to work at heights up to 120 ft.
  • Ability to climb multiple stairs throughout work shift
  • Ability to walk and be on feet at least 50% of the scheduled work shift
  • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions
