Position Purpose:


The Controls Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, support and improvement of the facilities plant floor control system.

This would include the following: being Plant liaison with outside integrators and contractors to ensure the plant’s business needs are met on time and within budget; Training of the facilities maintenance resources and operating technicians during the startup of new or modified control systems and act as a resource for the maintenance team when technical issues are beyond their understanding and ability to resolve.

This position will also provide innovation and support for continuous improvement projects.


Let's talk about Responsibilities:


  • Troubleshoot production problems and system failures when they occur on a timely basis until successful resolution, including major and minor maintenance of automated and non-automated equipment
  • Maintain and modify PLC programs to support the day to day operation of the facility
  • Manage Input/Output checkout for new projects and process improvements
  • Work on Continuous Improvement projects throughout the entire plant
  • Work closely with Maintenance and Operator Technician teams to assure that they are properly trained in the use of the plant control systems. Work with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) and Consultants to solve system related problems
  • Manage change control and keep validation of plant Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s) and SCADA system current
  • Provide technical support on capital projects
  • Provide on-call support for on-shift Technical Resources
  • Work in conjunction with the Network administrator to maintain the Facility Controls Network (hardware and software)
  • Document changes made to software and hardware (electrical and Process & Instrumentation prints).
  • Understand and align with Hill’s policies, safety standards, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and Food Safety. Identify and report Food Safety issues to management.


What you need for this position:


  • High School Diploma
  • 2 + years Industrial Technology Certificate or Electrical Electronic Technology degree or equivalent work experience
  • 5 +years’ experience in PLC Field with knowledge of WonderWare Intouch and Archestra (Allen-Bradley ControlLogix, Programmable Logic Controllers) or equivalent work experience
  • 2 +years’ experience in developing and/or changing electrical schematics or equivalent work experience
  • Ability to design and apply 3 phase 480 VAC circuit
  • Ability to design and apply 120 VAC and 24 VAC control circuit designs and applications
  • Know, understand and interpret NEC regulatory requirements
  • Be available to work on different shifts, up to 12hours/day and 7 days/week


It’s an advantage to have:


  • BS or equivalent Engineering/Engineering Technology in Controls or Electrical discipline
  • Experience troubleshooting Micromotion Flow meters, Servo Motors and drives
  • Ability to fix and commission Variable Frequency AC Drives, 3 phase motor starters, Solenoids, control values, Servo Motors and drives
  • Understanding of flowmeters
  • Micro Soft Structured Query Language (MSsql)
  • Industrial Structured Query Language (SQL)
  • Allen-Bradley Panelview
  • Sigmatek Programmable Logic Controllers and Operator interface


Expected Areas of Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


  • Ability to fix batching and continuous process control logic (ladder logic).
  • Ability to teach, coach and mentor facility technical resources and point people.
  • Ability to support on-call rotation schedule
  • Ability to adjust schedule to fit project startup and production needs
  • Ability to communicate effectively
